Quick facts

At a glance

This brilliant ride is set at two family-run luxury bush lodges located on their own private game reserve in the wild and unspoiled Waterberg region in the north of South Africa. This part of the country is known for an incredible diversity of terrain and scenery as well as wildlife, including many of the rarer species not easily observed elsewhere. Your hosts’ ancestors were one of the earliest pioneers in the area, settling here in 1886.

The lodges are widely known for their unparalleled horseback safari experience and unique flexibility. As a guest, each day is tailored to suit you. There is no fixed programme, the hosts pride themselves on their flexibility to accommodate everyone's needs and wishes. They can cater for any riding ability, both the experienced rider as the first-rime beginner, and also welcome non-riders and children of all ages. There is a range of activities available to suit any kind of guest, including bush walks, game drives, mountain biking and horse riding of course. The choice is yours!

The lodges have a herd of over 90 horses, who live a blissful life on the private game reserve amongst the wildlife. With the horses seen as a normal part of daily life, horse riding safari guests can get closer to wildlife than probably anywhere else in Africa. Guests can wake up when they want, ride when they want and for as long as they want. There will be no more than 6 guests on any one ride and each ride is accompanied by two guides as safety is of paramount importance. Riders of different abilities will not be mixed unless they choose to do so. Reliable ponies are available for children.

More information

The owners strive to create your home away from home. The two spacious and luxurious safari lodges are owner designed and built. Using local stone and thatch, they blend into the surroundings beautifully, setting the scene to give guests the most memorable bushveld views. Both lodges have room types of different sizes and standards available. Delicious cuisine with a blend of local and international recipes, glorious sundowner locations, beautiful gardens, various chill-out lounge spots and a heated swimming pool all make the relaxed and comfortable African atmosphere complete.

Both lodges can either be booked exclusively, to one group at a time (like a family), or you can book just one room, making it a favourite destination for multi-generational family bookings, solo riders, couples or friends travelling together. The staff is exceptionally hospitable and will go above and beyond to exceed your expectations to ensure your stay is a memorable and a life-changing safari experience.

What do others say?

I've always dreamed of a riding holiday abroad. After all, with a horse you get to places you never reach otherwise. Determined to embark on this journey alone, I stumbled upon Outside the Corral. Instantly, it felt right. Their website exuded clarity and honesty, instilling a sense of trust within me. What truly resonated was that Laure-Anne, the founder, had personally experienced the destination. She had witnessed the people, interacted with the horses, and ensured impeccable organization and care for these majestic creatures. This attention to detail gave me a comforting sense of security. Before the trip, I reached out with a few questions, and the communication was fantastic. Laure-Anne shared a brief account of her own experience, fostering a sense of familiarity. It also reassured my loved ones back home. I also liked the idea that you can communicate in your own language in case something happens. There are far too many incredible moments to recount them all, but the entire experience was an enchanting tapestry. The horses were exceptionally well-cared-for, reflecting the passion and devotion of the knowledgeable duo who led our journey. And great travel companions, with whom I visited special places, saw beautiful views and had a lot of fun.
Very nice experience! Laure-Anne makes all the time for you, discusses your wishes and then gives options that suit you. As a result, the trip suits the person booking it. But also afterwards, Laure-Anne is easy to reach for questions and thinks along with you. For example, my flight got changed and she immediately thought about how to solve the transfer. Also the personal aspect, with a message before your trip, but also checking in afterwards to see how your trip went. Makes it a nice and personal travel agency. And because she only offers riding holidays and visits them herself, she knows what she is selling. Laure-Anne, thanks again for the service and the fantastic trip I made thanks to you. I will definitely book here more often!
I travelled to Ireland as a non-rider and fully enjoyed the trip! The preparation went very smoothly, everything was prepared down to the last detail. Laure-Anne's enthusiasm made me very excited for departure. I am still reminiscing on the beautiful room, the friendly service, the delicious food and the tranquillity of nature during my walks.
Katrin Lauwers
From the very first introductory meeting with Outside the Corral, we had a very good feeling about Laure-Anne. With great enthusiasm she told us about the different trips she offers and gauged our expectations and our driving level. A few days later we received a worked out proposal of some destinations that would be a good fit. Choosing is not our strong suit and they all look so fantastic. So it took a while, sorry Laure-Anne :-). In the end, we chose the "Castles of the Gredos" trip in Spain. A very quiet and beautiful trek on blissful horses. Although the days of 7 hours in the saddle were sometimes a bit long for us, we enjoyed it immensely. This is really slow traveling, wonderful to be able to put off all the "must do" for a week and just enjoy the moments on your horse in the beautiful nature. Until departure Laure-Anne remained very involved, we really felt that no one in our travel group (mainly French and British riders) was so well informed about what to expect from the trip. Thank you Laure-Anne!
