Quick facts

At a glance

The Masai Mara Ride is without a doubt the crème-the-la-crème of African horse safaris. During this eight-night safari you’ll explore the beauty of the Masai Mara wilderness, home to abundant plains game, elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena. The landscape is one of rolling savannah and acacia woodland, intersected by dark green veins of riverine forest on the banks of the Mara and Olare Orok rivers. The annual ‘great migration’ of up to one million wildebeest is thrillingly dramatic and considered to be one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world.

Your hosts are the legendary guides Gordie and Felicia Church. Back in the 1970’s, it was Gordie’s father, Tony Church, who helped pioneer the idea of the long distance horse safari. Now internationally renowned for its professionalism and extraordinary experiences, the Church’s offer excellent, bespoke horse safaris. They are all personally guided by Gordie himself, with Felicia on hand to assist with the horses and logistics. Gordie’s understanding of the African landscapes, wildlife and indigenous people are second to none and he loves sharing this passion with his guests.

More information

You’ll travel 15 to 30 kilometres per day on horseback through the magical greater Mara Conservancies. Full days of riding when the group moves camp are alternated with days where you ride out of camp and return for lunch and a siesta in the afternoon. Spectacular wildlife encounters, exceptional riding country and incredible open landscapes are a few of your daily treats. The horses, primarily bred and raised at home, are a mixture of Somali-Arab crossbreds and thoroughbreds. Each safari horse is carefully schooled, exercised and loved to carry the guests safely through the African wilderness. Additionally, there are 4 x 4 safari vehicles and walking guides available for any non-riders or for those who wish to spend some time out of the saddle.

You are accommodated in exclusive, traditional mobile private tented camps, with large and comfortably furnished tents with twin or double beds and imported linen. The friendly camp crew makes you feel at home and part of the family from the very beginning. Hot bucket showers under the stars, big towels, warm duvets and hot water bottles are just a few of the features that you may expect. You’ll be spoilt with delicious food and tasty drinks. Enjoying a gin & tonic for sundowner around the campfire and a heart-warming meal at a candlelit dinner completes a day full of adventures.

What do others say?

After 10 years, I decided to get back in the saddle at Monte Velho and it became an unforgettable experience. The location, the delicious food and the nice group combined with dressage lessons and outdoor rides tailored to each rider made sure I had a top stay!
I've always dreamed of a riding holiday abroad. After all, with a horse you get to places you never reach otherwise. Determined to embark on this journey alone, I stumbled upon Outside the Corral. Instantly, it felt right. Their website exuded clarity and honesty, instilling a sense of trust within me. What truly resonated was that Laure-Anne, the founder, had personally experienced the destination. She had witnessed the people, interacted with the horses, and ensured impeccable organization and care for these majestic creatures. This attention to detail gave me a comforting sense of security. Before the trip, I reached out with a few questions, and the communication was fantastic. Laure-Anne shared a brief account of her own experience, fostering a sense of familiarity. It also reassured my loved ones back home. I also liked the idea that you can communicate in your own language in case something happens. There are far too many incredible moments to recount them all, but the entire experience was an enchanting tapestry. The horses were exceptionally well-cared-for, reflecting the passion and devotion of the knowledgeable duo who led our journey. And great travel companions, with whom I visited special places, saw beautiful views and had a lot of fun.
I highly recommend Outside the Corral as a partner for your next riding holiday. Laure-Anne understood our travel expectations very well and translated this in an attractive travel proposal. My questions at the start quickly became a non-issue thanks to Laure-Anne's expertise and the excellent guidance on site. OTC more than fulfilled its promise of a unique journey. I have already planned my next trip!

Laure-Anne had prepared the trip incredibly well and really counts down with you until the moment you leave. Amazing! During the trip, there was nothing to worry about. Carefree enjoyment of the horses, the people, the beautiful nature, accommodations and the delicious food. What a beautiful part of Spain too, which you might otherwise never visit. What I find a very big plus: having had some lesser experiences myself in terms of the welfare of the horses on horseback rides, it is blissful that Outside the Corral values this so highly. And how well the horses were looked after there!
