Be Safari-Smart: Five Packing Essentials for going on Horseback Safari

Packing for a holiday can be a challenge. Here are five packing essentials I’ve found incredibly useful when preparing for a horseback safari in Africa.

Packing for a holiday can be a challenge for most of us. But when you add the excitement (and potential chaos) of an adventurous horseback safari into the mix – especially if it’s your first time – the stress level can skyrocket!

No need to worry though. Here are five packing essentials I’ve found incredibly useful when preparing for a horseback safari in Africa. With these tips, you’ll be ready to embark on your unforgettable journey with confidence and ease!

1. Opt for a duffel bag

When it comes to safaris, especially if you’re hopping between different accommodations, a soft duffel bag is your best bet. Many safari outfitters actually require them and will provide specific guidelines. Hard-shell suitcases? A big no-no. They’re bulky and a hassle to store in transfer vehicles, whether that’s a car, small plane, or even a helicopter. Plus, they’re inconvenient when you need to grab something quickly from your tent or lodge. Duffel bags, on the other hand, are flexible, lightweight, and much easier to access – perfect for the safari life!

2. Pack a full riding outfit in your carry-on

It might have happened to you already. You’re standing at the luggage carousel after a long flight. Slowly but surely, everyone around you sees their luggage appear on the carousel, while yours never does. Lost luggage can happen, and while it usually shows up within 24 hours, arriving at your safari destination without your gear can be a major buzzkill.

To avoid this nightmare, make sure you pack one full riding outfit in your carry-on, including your riding helmet and boots. This way, you’ll be ready to jump in the saddle no matter what. Also, don’t forget other essentials like your phone charger and any personal medications. Better safe than sorry!

3. Use packing cubes

If you’re not already using packing cubes, prepare to have your mind blown! These little lifesavers keep your luggage organized, especially when using a soft duffel bag. I personally can’t imagine traveling without them anymore. With cubes in various sizes, I pack my t-shirts, socks, underwear, and other essentials neatly. No more rummaging through a chaotic bag – you’ll know exactly where everything is. Packing cubes = travel heaven!

4. Bring multiple (head) torches – preferably with red light

A torch is a must-have for any horseback safari, especially if you’re camping or glamping. Even if you’re staying in a lodge, a torch is handy for those evening strolls from your cabin to the dining area, or for nighttime safaris. Some areas are prone to power outages, so a torch is always good to have on hand.

I’d recommend bringing more than one torch, just in case the battery runs out on one. And for bonus points, get a (head) torch that can switch between white and red light. Red light attracts fewer bugs at night, which is a lifesaver when you’re out in the wilderness!

5. Pack lightweight, long-sleeve safari shirts

It might seem logical to throw in a bunch of short-sleeve t-shirts and tops when you’re heading to Africa during the wet season (read: hot summer months), but long sleeves with collars are actually your best friend on a horseback safari. Not only do they protect you from the sun’s harsh rays, but they also shield you from spiky branches while you’re riding through the bush.

Lightweight, long-sleeve safari shirts are perfect for keeping cool while offering essential protection. Plus, they help keep those pesky insects at bay, making your safari experience that much more enjoyable!

If you're traveling during Africa’s winter, which is the dry season (our summer), it’s important to pack layers. Mornings and evenings can be quite cold, but the temperature warms up significantly during the day. Layering ensures that you're comfortable no matter the time of day.

Don't forget to pack...

In addition to these five packing essentials, there are a few other things you can't forget. Think about bringing a sun hat or cap, high SPF sunscreen, a power bank, e-book, world plug and reusable water bottle. With these items packed, you’ll be fully prepped for an adventurous – and comfortable – horseback safari!
