The Masai Mara Ride is without a doubt the crème-the-la-crème of African horseback safaris. During this eight-night safari you’ll explore the beauty of the Masai Mara wilderness, home to abundant plains game, elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena. The landscape is one of rolling savannah and acacia woodland, intersected by dark green veins of riverine forest on the banks of the Mara and Olare Orok rivers. The annual ‘great migration’ of up to one million wildebeest is thrillingly dramatic and considered to be one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world.

Your hosts are the legendary guides Gordie and Felicia Church. Back in the 1970’s, it was Gordie’s father, Tony Church, who helped pioneer the idea of the long distance horse safari. Now internationally renowned for its professionalism and extraordinary experiences, the Church’s offer excellent, bespoke horse safaris. They are all personally guided by Gordie himself, with Felicia on hand to assist with the horses and logistics. Gordie’s understanding of the African landscapes, wildlife and indigenous people are second to none and he loves sharing this passion with his guests.

More information

You’ll travel 15 to 30 kilometres per day on horseback through the magical greater Mara Conservancies. Full days of riding when the group moves camp are alternated with days where you ride out of camp and return for lunch and a siesta in the afternoon. Spectacular wildlife encounters, exceptional riding country and incredible open landscapes are a few of your daily treats. The horses, primarily bred and raised at home, are a mixture of Somali-Arab crossbreds and thoroughbreds. Each safari horse is carefully schooled, exercised and loved to carry the guests safely through the African wilderness. Additionally, there are 4 x 4 safari vehicles and walking guides available for any non-riders or for those who wish to spend some time out of the saddle.

You are accommodated in exclusive, traditional mobile private tented camps, with large and comfortably furnished tents with twin or double beds and imported linen. The friendly camp crew makes you feel at home and part of the family from the very beginning. Hot bucket showers under the stars, big towels, warm duvets and hot water bottles are just a few of the features that you may expect. You’ll be spoilt with delicious food and tasty drinks. Enjoying a gin & tonic for sundowner around the campfire and a heart-warming meal at a candlelit dinner completes a day full of adventures.

What do others say?

I had a very nice equestrian holiday in Italy. The stay was soothing, green and idyllic. In addition, the staff and visitors were all very friendly. You do need a rental car, because the location is remote and there is hardly any public transport/taxis. The horses were reliable and the outdoor rides were beautiful. The booking of the trip with LaureAnne went smoothly. She responded quickly, adequately and is very attentive. I think the website is well put together and is nicer than those of other organizations. I would definitely book a trip with Outside the Corral again for a next holiday!

My friend and I went to Monte Velho, Portugal, through Outside the Corral. From the very first email, Laure-Anne was enthusiastic, which was a great sign for us. She patiently answered all our questions, and the fact that she had visited herself made us feel reassured. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking the first time, but Laure-Anne made everything very personal: regular emails with updates, a clear final email with the detailed program, and even a personal card in the mail! At that point, we knew we were in good hands.

On-site, everything was perfectly organized. Monte Velho is a stunning place to completely immerse yourself in your “horse bubble.” It was amazing: beautiful rooms with even more beautiful views, delicious meals three times a day, and after an intense day of riding, relaxing in the jacuzzi while overlooking the fields with the mares. The horses were incredible: well-mannered, responsive, gentle, and well cared for. During the lessons, they never put a foot wrong, even when we were trying things we had never done before; they did exactly what was asked, with or without help from the instructors. And the instructors themselves were fantastic: enthusiastic, which sometimes took a little getting used to, as their English occasionally had a Portuguese twist, haha. All in all, we had an amazing holiday and would go back in a heartbeat, maybe even as soon as next year!

What an amazing service, and most importantly, an incredibly cool trip! We intentionally chose to book through OTC for that extra sense of security. Going away for the first time is always a bit thrilling, but OTC provided us with great peace of mind through their excellent guidance and abundant information. We had several questions beforehand, and Laure-Anne promptly, thoroughly, and kindly answered them all. Even when there were some uncertainties upon arrival, she handled it well, and everything was resolved smoothly. Additionally, the location in Poland (Warmia-Mazuria) was truly stunning—a beautiful estate, friendly people, well-cared-for horses, and exciting rides (especially the cross, which is a must-try!). I would wholeheartedly recommend both this place and OTC itself. It was top-notch!!! Thanks so much!
