The Masai Mara Ride is without a doubt the crème-the-la-crème of African horse safaris. During this eight-night safari you’ll explore the beauty of the Masai Mara wilderness, home to abundant plains game, elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena. The landscape is one of rolling savannah and acacia woodland, intersected by dark green veins of riverine forest on the banks of the Mara and Olare Orok rivers. The annual ‘great migration’ of up to one million wildebeest is thrillingly dramatic and considered to be one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world.

Your hosts are the legendary guides Gordie and Felicia Church. Back in the 1970’s, it was Gordie’s father, Tony Church, who helped pioneer the idea of the long distance horse safari. Now internationally renowned for its professionalism and extraordinary experiences, the Church’s offer excellent, bespoke horse safaris. They are all personally guided by Gordie himself, with Felicia on hand to assist with the horses and logistics. Gordie’s understanding of the African landscapes, wildlife and indigenous people are second to none and he loves sharing this passion with his guests.

More information

You’ll travel 15 to 30 kilometres per day on horseback through the magical greater Mara Conservancies. Full days of riding when the group moves camp are alternated with days where you ride out of camp and return for lunch and a siesta in the afternoon. Spectacular wildlife encounters, exceptional riding country and incredible open landscapes are a few of your daily treats. The horses, primarily bred and raised at home, are a mixture of Somali-Arab crossbreds and thoroughbreds. Each safari horse is carefully schooled, exercised and loved to carry the guests safely through the African wilderness. Additionally, there are 4 x 4 safari vehicles and walking guides available for any non-riders or for those who wish to spend some time out of the saddle.

You are accommodated in exclusive, traditional mobile private tented camps, with large and comfortably furnished tents with twin or double beds and imported linen. The friendly camp crew makes you feel at home and part of the family from the very beginning. Hot bucket showers under the stars, big towels, warm duvets and hot water bottles are just a few of the features that you may expect. You’ll be spoilt with delicious food and tasty drinks. Enjoying a gin & tonic for sundowner around the campfire and a heart-warming meal at a candlelit dinner completes a day full of adventures.

What do others say?

I absolutely loved my trip to Monte Velho! The setting is incredible and the accomodation is outstanding. The horses were amazing. Very well cared for and in great condition. The stables, arenas and land are all immaculately kept. Doing a mix of dressage lessons and trail rides was great. Having never ridden in a dressage saddle, or ridden a classically trained dressage horse before visiting Monte Velho, I was a little nervous about my first lesson. However there was no need to be, and I felt very comfortable. I learnt a lot from my lessons, with tips that I was able to bring back home to improve my riding on my own horse. All of the horses are so well trained, and it really makes you ask for things correctly to get the right response! The trail rides were such fun, and the grounds are just incredible. The staff were fabulous. All so friendly and attentive. The food was great too. I would highly recommend booking through Outside the Corral. Laure-Anne is so attentive and easy to deal with. The booking process was so easy, and I felt at ease that everything was well handled. Laure-Anne was always very quick to respond to any queries and questions. Thank you Laure-Anne for organizing such a perfect trip. It definitely won’t be my last booking through Outside the Corral!

What an absolute TOP holiday we have just had. We already contacted LaureAnne last year for a trip to Ireland. Crosscountry, bucket list item, but never dared to do it with our own horses. So ideal location My husband, who does not do horse riding at all, was fortunately enthusiastic about Ireland and went along with my dream All this was discussed with LaureAnne via video call and our travel program could be adjusted accordingly. We chose to drive for 5 days (instead of 7), so that we could still spend the weekend together. After a long countdown, the time had finally come last week. Castle Leslie, there we came In 1 word WOW !! I have had a fantastic week with the horses. Wonderful rides on the domain and expert feedback from the instructors during the indoor lessons. Many different horses ridden, each with their own character. In the meantime, my husband has had fun swimming/cycling/running in the area and has familiarized himself with the drink menu of the bar on the :-D domain Everything was arranged down to the last detail before we left and during the week LaureAnne was always available for any questions and genuinely interested in how things were going for us. This trip will resonate in our dreams for a long time and we will definitely go back again!

I heard about Outside the Corral through friends, and from my very first contact with Laure-Anne, I knew I wanted to choose this organisation for my first riding holiday. Her enthusiasm, combined with the clear and thorough information she provided, immediately inspired confidence.

For my first trip, I chose Costa Brava: Coast & Hinterland, and it was clear that Outside the Corral had prepared us extremely well. We received excellent information about every aspect of the holiday. Laure-Anne was always available both before and during the trip, which was very reassuring. Even after the holiday, she took the time to listen to our feedback.

My first experience with Outside the Corral was fantastic, and I would happily recommend it to anyone. When I book my next riding holiday, it will definitely be with this organisation!
