Your base for this unforgettable Andalusian ride is the cortijo Kukutana, a name that comes from Swahili, meaning “encounter”. Built in 1919, this historic farmhouse was recently opened to guests by the Llorente family under the welcoming motto: “Nuestra casa es tu casa.” Whether you’re an experienced rider, a beginner, or a non-rider, Kukutana offers tailor-made experiences for everyone, ensuring there’s always something to enjoy and that you feel at home.
Nestled in southwestern Andalusia on the edge of the UNESCO-listed Doñana National Park (NP), one of Europe’s most important biosphere reserves, Kukutana lies close to the unique pilgrimage village of El Rocío. The NP’s landscapes are breathtakingly diverse: shifting and fixed sand dunes, marshes, lagoons, shallow rivers, and vast pine forests provide a sanctuary for an extraordinary variety of wildlife.
The almost entirely sandy terrain makes it perfect for exploring the region on horseback. Typical rides from Kukutana last around three hours and offer ever-changing scenery: canter through pine forests, visit the charming village of El Rocío, cross wetlands and shallow rivers within the National Park, or ride along the unspoilt beaches of the Huelva coast. Each ride reveals a new facet of this spectacular Andalusian gem. Non-riders can explore the region by 4×4, carriage, bike, as well as on foot.

At Kukutana, accommodation is much more than just a place to sleep. It is a complete experience designed for relaxation, comfort and immersion in the heart of Doñana. The Spanish farmhouse has been recently renovated by the owners – a family of talented architects and interior designers, blending traditional elegance with subtle equestrian touches throughout. The house features seven comfortable rooms with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious living room with fireplace, a formal dining room, an outdoor dining area and a swimming pool.
Kukutana is also a true gastronomic haven. Chef Lourdes brings generations-old recipes to life, combining local specialties with family favorites. Days start with a sumptuous breakfast, lunch can be a picnic on the ride, a fresh seafood feast on the beach, or a poolside meal, and evenings are crowned with a sunset aperitif followed by a delicious Andalusian dinner.
The horses at Kukutana include Andalusians, Selle Français, warmbloods, and crosses of these breeds. They are well-trained, spirited, and a pleasure to ride. The guides know them inside out. Each horse is carefully matched to your riding level and preferences, reflecting the team’s genuine passion for their animals. You can ride in English saddles or traditional Spanish saddles with sheepskin, across varied terrain – sometimes rocky and quiet, other times perfect for controlled trots and gallops. Horse riding here is more than a sport; it’s a way of life, letting you traverse ancient forests and endless sandy paths once favored by the Spanish nobility.
